The Image of Roma in Czech Cinema After 1990

We are beyond the time when the best Roma character in film could only be played by Labuda or Polívka, but one Godla doesn’t make spring. How many Czech feature films about Roma actually exist, and what do they convey? How often does racism manifest, whether with good or bad intentions, or due to lack of thought? From Naked for Sale, Smelly People, and Roming to Bastards and The Bridge!, with detours to The Way Out and Report on the Journey of Students by Petr Jakub. Discussing the white savior syndrome, comedic tokens, relics from the past regime, and Lakatoš from Obecná škola (The Elementary School), who will be a Slav "next time."

Roma Actors in Mainstream Productions

Industry program

What challenges do Roma actors and actresses face in mainstream productions? Tradition vs. the present in the profession of actors and actresses with Roma ethnicity. Young artists from the film industry shared their needs and examples of good practices at the Tu+kino Roma Film Festival.

Institutional Support for Roma Creators in the Czech Republic

How can Czech film institutions respond to the growing interest of Roma creators? And how can these institutions be approached by the creators themselves? A discussion with representatives from key players in the Czech film market and a space for initiating dialogue at a structural level.
