What does it mean to enter television screenwriting with a voice and experience that have so far been almost entirely absent from the field? A round table with Romani women screenwriters will explore questions of Romani representation, authors’ own creative responsibility, what they have learned while entering the professional environment, and what they still feel they lack.

The following case study, Face to Face, will offer the perspective of television professionals: what have we learned from working with emerging writers, and at what point is supporting individual talent no longer enough, making systemic change necessary? Together, we will ask what role film schools, public funding, broadcasters and producers can play in ensuring that minority voices gain not only opportunities, but also the conditions needed to build sustainable careers in the industry.

DISCUSSION

The Potential and Limits of Reconciliation in the Political Climate of the 21st Century

Can a society come to terms with its past while individuals continue to live with its consequences? Public gestures of reconciliation and attempts to overcome historical conflicts may clash with personal experiences of racism, violence, persecution or loss that do not necessarily align with society’s broader need for reconciliation.

Following the screening of That Boy, the discussion will ask whether social and personal reconciliation can be separated, who has the right to forgive – and whether a truly resilient society is built precisely through its ability to listen to the voices of those whose experiences remain marginalised in public debate.

A discussion about the limits of forgiveness, memory, reconciliation and social resilience.
